This Isn’t Kansas Anymore
Bringing back a two-year writing journey to Oz
Some unimaginably long time ago, or rather 15ish years, I sat down with six other writers and decided to take a stab at returning to Oz with a single thought in mind: “What if Dorothy Gale’s great-granddaughter, a US Marine with two tours in Afghanistan under her belt, found herself in a world that she was sure was a fairytale, a long, tired story told by her namesake?”
For two years, with some authors coming and some going, and eventually five of us sticking around to nail this down, we delivered nearly 150 episodes with no script.
Five main characters — Dot, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Lion, and Glinda, the not-so-good-anymore Witch — along with a host of minor side characters, went on a journey to rediscover the world of the Wizard of Oz + the world of Wicked. We combined elements of the original books, Gregory McGuire’s later novels, and even Winnie Holzman’s musical. We also added some little bits and pieces of our own personal lives, as all authors are want to do, to deliver characters new and old, brimming with darkness, seething with anger and betrayal and a determination to set things “right.”
Only right is not always what one expects.
What’s left is a character-rotating story of discovery, pain, envy, lust, and revenge, where in each corner there lurks a little broken piece of ourselves that we never intended anyone to see.
